It seems that recent generations are plagued with the belief that it’s not food if it doesn’t come from the grocery store. But with what we’re learning about the food industry, I would argue that it’s significantly less likely to be food if it does come from the store. I’ve made it a personal goal of mine to sneak freely foraged food (mostly from my own yard) onto our plates whenever I can. When I first began learning about all the edible weeds that grow in Florida, I started caring a lot less about having an as aesthetically pleasing yard (although neighbors would likely be shocked that I had any less to care), and a lot more about seeing what treasures would pop up.
Purslane is hands down my favorite edible Florida weed. I let it take over large patches of my garden on its own will, and try to share it with any friends that are interested in eating weeds. Purslane is incredibly nutritious! And it tastes delicious! And it grows itself! I don’t understand why this one isn’t more common to eat in the U.S. — is in other countries. Although I do think it’s gaining popularity.
One of my most memorable experiences learning about Florida edibles was through a Green Deane foraging tour, and I love what he has to say about this lovely little plant. https://www.eattheweeds.com/purslane-omega-3-fatty-weed/
We usually just eat it in salads, because that’s the easiest. It’s crunchy with a mild citrus flavor. But it’s also great sautéed with eggs. We love to add it to simple orzo pasta salads. I think everyone should know about, and let purslane grow in their yard. If you’re looking for a way to grow your own food on a budget, purslane is hands down the way to go.

I love to point it out to people any chance I get. “See that little weed? You can eat it. It’s super high in Omega 3s.” And I never even knew to care about Omega 3s until I met purslane.

And here’s a little bonus recipe of my favorite way to prepare it, just so you can understand how truly easy eating purslane can be:
Purslane Simple Salad:
Ingredients:
- Purslane
- Tomatoes, cucumbers, onions etc. (or any other toppings of choice)
- Salad dressing of choice
Directions: Chop your purslane and toppings. Combine all and enjoy your burst of Omega 3s!
Below is an example of my super simple, add whatever you want (but definitely purslane!) orzo pasta salad.
